Lady Godiva, also known by the Old English name Godgifu, was an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who lived during the 11th century.

She was the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, one of the most powerful noblemen in England before the Norman Conquest.

Historical records indicate that Godiva and Leofric were significant landowners and benefactors of religious institutions. Godiva herself appears in historical records as a woman of considerable wealth and status—something particularly noteworthy in medieval England.

She is closely associated with Coventry, where she and Leofric supported religious institutions and where her legendary story would eventually become inseparable from the identity of the city.

The Legendary Ride Through Coventry

The story for which Lady Godiva became famous developed generations after her lifetime.

According to the traditional legend, the people of Coventry were burdened by heavy taxation imposed by her husband. Lady Godiva repeatedly appealed to Leofric to reduce the burden.

Eventually, according to the story, he agreed—but only if she would ride through Coventry unclothed.

Godiva accepted the challenge.

Out of respect for her, the townspeople were said to have remained indoors and closed their shutters as she passed through the streets.

Her husband then honored his promise and reduced the taxes.

The details of this famous ride cannot be established as historical fact. The earliest surviving written account appeared long after Godiva's lifetime, and elements of the story changed as it was retold over the centuries.

Yet the endurance of the legend may tell us something just as interesting as the historical facts themselves.
