FAQs

Frquently Asked Questions

1. What kind of metal is used to create Bowman Originals Jewelry?
At Bowman Originals, we exclusively use solid Sterling Silver and solid 18k Gold in all our designs. The white metal you see is Sterling Silver, and the yellow metal is 18k Gold—never plated or filled.

Sterling Silver
Our Sterling Silver is .925 fine, meaning it is composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals. We use only pure copper in this alloy to ensure strength while maintaining its hypoallergenic quality.

18k Gold
Our 18k Gold is .750 fine, which means it contains 75% pure gold. The remaining 25% is a custom alloy of pure silver and pure copper, chosen for both color stability and skin safety.

Solid Metals
When we say "solid," we mean the metal is the same throughout—not plated, filled, or bonded to any base metal. This ensures long-lasting quality and minimizes potential for wear or allergic reactions.

Please Note:
We do not use any filler or mystery metals in our alloys. Filler metals are often the source of skin sensitivities and allergic reactions. Our commitment to purity and integrity ensures that Bowman Originals jewelry is as safe as it is beautiful.

2. Who makes this jewelry? Who designs it?
Every piece of Bowman Originals jewelry is handmade by our small team of skilled artisans in Sarasota, Florida. We do not rely on computers, 3D printing, or mass production techniques—our work is entirely handcrafted, guided by traditional tools and time-honored methods.

As we like to say: “By Hands Only” and “We’re going backward—and proud of it.”

Each member of the Bowman Originals team contributes their expertise to the creation and refinement of our designs. Ned Bowman, our founder and lead designer, is a national and international DeBeers award-winning jeweler, and his vision shapes every collection we produce. Our jewelry reflects not only fine craftsmanship but also a shared passion for artistry, heritage, and excellence.

3. Are all the stones genuine?
Yes—all of the stones used in our inventory jewelry are 100% genuine. We do not use synthetic, simulated, or substitute stones in any of our standard collection pieces.

Please Note:
Custom orders may occasionally incorporate sentimental stones provided by clients, which may not always be natural or genuine. However, any stones sourced and supplied by Bowman Originals are always authentic, natural gems of the highest quality.

4. What is the inspiration for Bowman Originals Jewelry?
Bowman Originals jewelry is inspired by ancient history, mythology, and cultural anthropology. We create meaningful jewelry—designs that incorporate symbols and forms from ancient civilizations, each with a message that transcends time.

At Bowman Originals, we believe that wearing symbolic jewelry is a timeless act of self-expression. From ancient talismans to modern heirlooms, jewelry has always held power—whether worn for protection, love, remembrance, or personal identity. It is more than ornamentation; it is a message worn close to the heart.

Our handcrafted Sterling Silver and 18k Gold pieces are rooted in rich symbolism and artisan detail. Each design invites a deeper connection between meaning and adornment, allowing the wearer to express their story with elegance and authenticity.

5. What is Vitreous Enamel?
Vitreous enamel—also known as hard enamel, hot enamel, or true enamel—is created by fusing finely ground glass to metal at extremely high temperatures, typically between 1,400°F and 1,600°F.

This ancient art form has adorned jewelry, armor, and decorative objects for over 3,000 years. Valued for its glass-like brilliance, rich color, and exceptional durability, vitreous enamel becomes a permanent part of the metal surface, making it both beautiful and lasting. Unlike surface paints or synthetic coatings, it will not fade, discolor, or wear away with time—making it a perfect match for heirloom-quality jewelry.

6. How does Vitreous Enamel differ from other enamels?
Vitreous enamel is fundamentally different from resin enamel, a modern alternative made from synthetic polymers. While resin enamel allows for faster production and can imitate color and shine, it lacks the durability and permanence of vitreous enamel.

Resin enamel may yellow, scratch, or soften over time, especially when exposed to heat, moisture, or sunlight. It is more prone to wear and environmental stress. In contrast, vitreous enamel is fused glass—it will not tarnish, crack, fade, or discolor. Its brilliance remains intact for generations, making it the preferred choice for heirloom-quality jewelry.

7. What is Patina?
Patina refers to the natural or intentionally applied surface coloration that develops on metals over time through exposure to air, moisture, and handling. In fine jewelry, patina is cherished for the depth, character, and warmth it imparts—transforming polished metal into a surface rich with subtle texture and visual storytelling.

Rather than diminishing a piece, patina enhances it, giving Sterling Silver and other precious metals a soft, time-worn beauty that reflects the passage of time and the uniqueness of its wearer. At Bowman Originals, patina is often applied by hand to enhance contrast, highlight detail, and create a finish that is both refined and timeless.

8. How does Bowman Originals utilize patina in its jewelry?
At Bowman Originals, we embrace the art of sterling silver patina to create a rich, timeworn aesthetic that accentuates the fine details of our hand-engraved and sculpted designs. Each piece undergoes a careful oxidation process, followed by meticulous hand-polishing to achieve a high-contrast finish—darkening recessed areas while allowing raised surfaces to shine with a soft, elegant luster.

This technique not only enhances the visual depth of each piece but also celebrates the handmade nature of our work. Every link, curve, and engraving reflects the artistry and intention behind our collections. Our patina finishes are durable yet dynamic, gradually evolving with wear to develop a personalized, heirloom-quality look unique to each wearer.

9. How do I clean my Bowman Originals jewelry?
To preserve the beauty and integrity of your Bowman Originals patina finish, gentle care is essential:

  • Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Strong silver polishes, chemicals, and ultrasonic machines can strip away the hand-applied patina. Always opt for mild cleaning methods.

  • Use a Soft Cloth: A dry or slightly damp jewelry polishing cloth is perfect for removing fingerprints, oils, and light tarnish without disturbing the finish.

  • Store Properly: Keep your jewelry in a dry, soft-lined box or pouch to prevent unwanted oxidation and protect against scratches.

  • Wear It Often: The natural oils from your skin help maintain the luster of sterling silver. In fact, patina-enhanced jewelry often looks better with regular wear.

Refreshing or Restoring Patina
If your piece's patina fades more than you'd prefer, we're always here to help. You’re welcome to bring or send your jewelry back to the Bowman Originals Workshop for professional cleaning and patina restoration.

At Bowman Originals, each piece is crafted not just to be worn—but to be lived in, cherished, and passed down. The evolving patina on your sterling silver jewelry is a reflection of both our craftsmanship and your personal journey. With mindful care, your jewelry will continue to grow more beautiful and meaningful with time.

10. Is there a warranty or guarantee on the jewelry?
Yes. Every piece of Bowman Originals jewelry comes with a 100% Lifetime Guarantee on Workmanship. We stand behind the quality of our handcrafted designs and are committed to ensuring your jewelry remains as enduring as the craftsmanship behind it.
