The Art of Transformation: Cutting Mineral Specimens into Cabochons in the Bowman Originals Lapidary Studio
In the quiet rhythm of the lapidary studio, raw mineral specimens awaken to their destiny. What begins as a rough, unpolished fragment of the earth becomes a mirror of light and color — shaped, smoothed, and refined into a cabochon that tells a story millions of years in the making. At Bowman Originals, this transformation is not industrial or mechanical; it’s intimate, precise, and guided entirely by hands only.
From Earth to Elegance
Each cabochon begins with discovery. Sodalite, Malachite, Lapis Lazuli, Chrysoprase — stones chosen not only for their hue and rarity but for their personality. Every mineral specimen carries a unique fingerprint of inclusions, fissures, and inner fire. Our master lapidary artist studies each raw piece, envisioning how light might travel across its surface, how shape might enhance its natural beauty, and how it will live within a finished work of jewelry.
Before the first cut, there is a moment of respect — for nature’s artistry and for the potential hidden within the stone.
The Lapidary Process: By Hands Only
Inside the Bowman Originals Lapidary Studio in Sarasota, Florida, traditional techniques meet artistic intuition.
- Sawing: The rough stone is trimmed with a precision diamond saw, revealing clean surfaces and orienting the best pattern or color band for cutting.
- Shaping: On a coarse grinding wheel, the outline of the cabochon emerges — often an oval, teardrop, or freeform silhouette inspired by the stone itself.
- Dopping: The preform is secured on a dop stick with natural wax to allow control during fine shaping.
- Doming & Smoothing: With finer grit wheels, the dome is sculpted, edges are balanced, and symmetry is refined — a harmony between geometry and intuition.
- Polishing: The surface is brought to a luminous finish using oxide compounds and felt wheels, unveiling the true character of the stone — its depth, translucence, and hidden brilliance.
Every motion is guided by touch and sight, not automation. This is jewelry-making as art, where patience becomes perfection.
The Philosophy Behind the Cabochon
A cabochon is more than a polished gem — it is a canvas of the earth. Unlike faceted gemstones that chase brilliance through symmetry, cabochons celebrate organic form and natural light. Their smooth, curved surfaces invite reflection — literal and metaphorical. They remind us that beauty is not only found in perfection, but in individuality.
Bowman Originals cabochons are cut not to standard dimensions, but to the soul of the stone. Each piece is unique, shaped to harmonize with the metalwork that will embrace it — Sterling Silver, 18k Gold, or both, in designs that honor tradition while speaking in the language of modern art.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
In a world of mass production and mechanical polish, the Bowman Originals Lapidary Studio preserves the heritage of the handmade. Each cabochon is the result of decades of skill, artistic judgment, and respect for natural materials. The same hands that cut and shape these stones also design and fabricate the jewelry they inhabit, ensuring that every piece — from rough mineral to finished heirloom — bears the unmistakable signature of human artistry.
From the saw’s first spark to the final polish, each cabochon represents transformation — from nature’s rough gift to a wearable work of art.

Ned Bowman, the visionary behind Bowman Originals, lives, breathes, and dreams jewelry. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1955, Ned's passion for finely crafted adornments began early. As a young man, he often accompanied his parents on antique-hunting adventures through New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. It was there, in the elegant halls of Rothchild's Antiques on Royal Street, that Mrs. Greenblatt introduced him to the world of exquisite antique jewelry. That spark of wonder ignited a lifelong fascination—one that continues to inspire every piece Ned designs today.
After attending Tulane and LSU Ned completed his formal education at Northern Arizona University, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. His commitment to learning, however, extends well beyond the classroom. Ned continues to refine and expand his craft through ongoing experimentation with innovative ideas and materials.
In 1996, encouraged by fellow jewelry designers, Ned Bowman began entering prestigious jewelry design competitions. His exceptional talent was soon recognized with multiple accolades, including three De Beers Diamond Design Awards in the United States, one International De Beers Diamond Design Award, and an award from the Japanese Pearl Association.
